The Sanctions Against Russia Aren’t Working. Why?
The sanctions against Russia aren’t working, and we need to stop thinking that they will. Europe shot itself in the leg with these economic sanctions, and the proxy war against Russia in Ukraine is proving very costly.
The Flawed Argument for Sanctions
Oleg Orlov, a critic of Putin and one of the prisoners part of the recent prisoner exchange with Russia, recently claimed that the sanctions against Russia would start having an impact on Russia.
His argument, pointing towards a gradual lack of investments, new technology, and necessary resources due to sanctions, is fundamentally flawed. It demonstrates a profound lack of understanding on behalf of the West about Russia’s economic realities and the changing global landscape.
Although Orlov is Russian, he is a Western mind.
The problem is that the West thinks sanctioning Russia will have a massive impact. They’ve always thought this.
But the reality is that the sanctions don’t have much effect.
Putin himself talks about this coming multipolar world, where it’s not just one or two superpowers, but multiple countries gaining significant power and influence.
The idea that good versus evil still dominates international relations is outdated. Even some Europeans are beginning to understand and sympathize with the potential reasons behind Putin’s actions in Ukraine.
